Violence in Schools and Social Development Essay

Viciousness in Schools and Social Development - Essay Example While numerous strategies have been used to address this issue, they by and large fall somewhere close to the liberal standards with respect to recovery of the culprits of brutality since they have had an impeded youth to the preservationist approach which advocates discipline and compensation to the person in question. As a rule, the liberal view bolsters sympathy while the moderate accepts carefully in the individual representing their activities. Viciousness in schools is being seen increasingly more as a social shamefulness issue for youngsters as well as a general wellbeing concern. Savagery makes an air of dread that influences the people in question, the guilty parties and the encompassing open. This pattern of dread and doubt spreads both solitary and self-decrying examples of conduct. For the wrongdoer, considers have inferred that there regularly is a movement of forceful and brutal practices after some time. Survivors of savagery, particularly youngsters, convey with them for the duration of their lives the passionate scars for the most part as self-analysis. Those children that unendingly carry out brutal acts towards colleagues are bound to utilize medications and liquor, to stop going to class by and large and proceed to be engaged with criminal conduct further down the road. Youngsters who are frequently the casualties of schoolyard savagery will in general experience more worry in their lives which prompts more significant levels of tension, despondency, physical sicknesses and considerations of self destruction than those that don't. For both domineering jerk and tormented, these activities contrarily influence learning possibilities and retards self-awareness. The apparently endless pattern of threatening activities attempts to destroy the underpinnings of a common society from the base up. The explanation youngsters carry on fiercely towards others is on the grounds that they have been treated with slight or have been harassed themselves. An example of poor social modification propagates itself

Bio-Medical Discourse

Talk about the qualities and impediments of social work practice inside an association, for example, a medical clinic, that works from a biomedical talk (give a model)? The biomedical talk is one of the most compelling talks in the medicinal services calling today (Healy, p. 20). Biomedicine is a prevailing and unavoidable model in medicinal services settings and there are qualities and confinements in working inside the this discourse. One of the qualities of working inside this model, it permits you to work inside a multidisciplinary group with therapists, specialists, attendants, and other clinical staff and this opens up an entirely different viewpoint for social laborers. We get the chance to see the clinical side of things and how that influences the individual. At the point when a clinical expert see’s a patient they see the immediate issue of that persistent and there disease.Using this model and the entirety of our social work abilities and approaches will give us an a ll out image of what's going on in that person’s life by taking a gander at nature as well as instituting different factors, for example, the organic perspective. We can assist customers explore through the medicinal services framework and can explain clinical terms to assist them with feeling quiet with there disease. The biomedical talk has its constraints as well. This model works under the conviction that disease’s are brought about by a particular organic operators or procedures and neglects to investigate the individual condition and living components. It is out occupation as social laborers to take a gander at all of different factors, for example, condition, family, culture ect of that individual, not simply the concentrating on the individual and changing the individual. I worked with a social laborer on the cardiovascular recovery unit at the Glenrose Hospital and she worked with a patient that had a coronary failure and had sidestep medical procedure and is p resently in rehab. He was offered prescriptions to take after the medical procedure and in all likelihood will be on for a mind-blowing remainder. The specialists enlighten the patient all regarding the average methodology they simply had, what current prescriptions they are on and how to take them and what the reactions are, nut never talk pretty much the various elements that become possibly the most important factor. The social laborer needs to now get ready the patient to get back as well as needs to set up the family with respect to how there condition will be changing so as to have a protected recuperation for the patient. As social specialists it tends to be difficult for us to disregard the natural commitments in an individual’s life. The social laborer just had two encounters with the patient and the family, the nutritionist had another two visit’s and the doctor has on going encounters with the patient for as long is required. The doctor was just worried about the malady and finding of the patient and altering the individual. Another restriction is the emphasis on medicalization. Not every person needs clinical consideration and to be put on medication. Our employments as social specialists are to perceive that people’s situations truly influence them. Individual can come into see there GP and disclose to them that they are discouraged, the primary thing they do is put them on med’s for their downturn. They don’t see what has been going on in that person’s life, have they experienced a significant injury, what changes have been occurring. All they take a gander at are the side effects and the prescriptions to come side of them. This verifies the specialist is the master and knows best.

Thoughtful Laughter in Beckets Waiting for Godot

Awakening Thoughtful Laughter in Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot Samuel Beckett’s use of humor can be seen throughout his repertoire of work, ranging from the exaggeratedly tragic lives of the two characters in Rough for Theater I to the mechanical prodding that is required to rouse the characters in Act Without Words II. The humor in Beckett’s work is given dimension by the fact that it addresses morbid themes such as death, poverty, suffering, and the crushing despair and apathy that comes with the realization of the meaninglessness of life--the cornerstone of existentialism. Thus, the reader is amused by the works because, through humor, Beckett lightens the tenebrous view of life that is existentialism. Such a response to†¦show more content†¦In addition to serving as a symbol of the oppressed masses and a jumping-off point for heightening one’s own image, Lucky’s response to the way he is treated provokes thoughtful laughter in that he, too, does little to help his own cause. Beckett illustrates this in a scene in act I where Lucky kicks Estragon in the shins when Estragon, after encouragement from Pozzo, attempts to actually help Lucky. Initially, this part of the play can be considered funny because of the physical comedy. When one looks closer, however, it becomes apparent that this action has much stronger implications; Lucky’s character is beaten-down, oppressed by his supposed superiors, and overworked, yet when others make an attempt at helping him he refuses to accept such charity and instead makes a point of injuring his attendant. While laughable because Estragon’s injury is unexpected and entirely uncalled-for, this action is crucial to illuminating the dysfunctional nature of interpersonal relationships in which one person reaches out to another who is suffering. Not only has Lucky refused assistance in an alleged time of need, but has also managed to injure someone else in the process. This interaction between Lucky and Estragon is illustrative of

Should Gay Be Gay - 1506 Words

Gay men are stereotypically feared for potentially â€Å"recruiting† others into also becoming gay, especially young children like students, due to the belief that gayness is â€Å"contagious,† like a sickening plague that should be avoided, although â€Å"there is no empirical proof that a gay teacher can affect the sexual preference of school-aged children† Kirk and Paul Cameron from the Family Research Institute in Colorado Springs explain (603). Parents and administrators therefore fear that interactions between young students and gay teachers will undesirably turn these children, believed to be asexual but also heterosexual, gay, thus imposing on children’s believed natural and â€Å"inherently heterosexual† characteristics, explained by Hidehiro Endo†¦show more content†¦Homophobic beliefs that â€Å"gay men are predatory by nature; and the identification of homosexuality with pedophilia† (Squirrel, 88) are still circulated wit hin today’s supposed progressive society, including institutions that are believed to combat this type of ignorance. This is because, â€Å"if schools are to be understood as social institutions that reflect the social order to which they belong, then the exclusionary spaces that exist outside of them will exist inside,† which is why school environments may not change until their larger, dominant spaces in which they reside in, also change (Gray, Harris Jones 288). The stereotype that gay males are inherently attracted to minors, and act on these supposed impulsions, â€Å"may be critically recast as a fantasy that has been put into play by (some) heterosexuals; a fantasy that enables them to dwell on the images of children’s bodies as objects of desire,† in which through this belief, completely sexualize children and debunking claims of their supposed asexuality (King 16). Analysis Of Nursing Care And Prioritization †MyAssignmenthelp.com

Question: Discuss about the Analysis Of Nursing Care And Prioritization. Answer: According to Moorhead et al. (2014), numerous factors influence the care plan of patients who are suffering from chronic conditions. It is the duty of the primary health care nurse to procure care based on clinical priority and the requirement of the patient. According to Lehne and Rosenthal (2014), prioritization is an integral part of nursing care and prioritization of care helps to maximize the effectiveness of nursing interventions. Lehne and Rosenthal (2014) have further opined that prioritization can be achieved via integration and collaboration of different aspects of patients requirement. The following essay aims to analyze two main priorities of care via critically evaluating the case study of Peter Mitchell under the light of the clinical reasoning cycle. Clinical reasoning cycle can be defined as the process via which the healthcare personnel employ their deductive, inductive cognitive skills in order frame the clinical decisions on priority basis, and this in turn helps to procure safe care to the patient (Audtat et al, 2013). Audtat et al (2013) has also stated that clinical reasoning cycle helps the nursing professionals to step wise tabulate the process involved in framing and procuring care starting from the collection of cues, processing the information, establishment of goals, action taking and simultaneous evaluation of outcomes. The first step of the clinical reasoning cycle is considering the patient situation. The main factors that must be taken into consideration in the case study of Peter Mitchell is, he is suffering from morbid obesity along with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The major symptoms experienced by him include obesity ventilation syndrome, poorly controlled diabetes and sleep apnoea. Other associated symptoms include increased hunger, diaphoresis and symptoms of shakiness. These facts are important in relation to clinical reasoning towards the direction of framing priority based patient care plan. According to Sturm and Hattori (2013), morbid obesity entails serious health consequences in comparison to the moderate obesity. Sturm and Hattori (2013) have further opined that severely over-weight individuals who are 100 or 200 pounds ( 90 to 45 Kgs) or even more than that have far more complex health issues and encounter various challenges in healthcare system in comparison to the moderately obese i ndividuals. In case of Peter Mitchell, he is 145 Kg and hence his obesity can surely be considered an important factor to describe the patients conditions. Poorly controlled Type 2 Diabetes is another factor for describing patient situation because, glycemic control in type 2 diabetes patients who are also severely obese are difficult to achieve and is frequently associated with hypertension and high concentration of bad lipoprotein or low-density lipoprotein in blood (Brethauer et al. 2013). Other important list of facts Age 52 years Gender Male Other symptoms Difficulty in breathing while sleeping Other habits Smokes 20 cigarettes per day for the last 30 years The second step of clinical reasoning cycle is collecting cues or information (Audtat et al, 2013). The past medical history of entails that Peter Mitchell was obese weighing around 145 Kilograms approximately. Initially he use to weigh around 105 but after he lost his job and went on the insulin medication because of diabetes, his weight bar escalate exponentially. Peter Mitchell has been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus 9 years ago and has also been suffering from depressing (3 months ago) along with hypertension. According to Inzucchi et al. (2012), uncontrolled rate of type 2 diabetes mellitus leads to severe obesity and this might be the case in case of Peter Mitchell. Moreover, his depression which might have stem due to sudden loss of job but this depression has further aggravated the chronicity of the type 2 diabetes. According to the reports published by Rotella and Mannucci (2013), depression is an important risk factor behind the development of the type 2 diabetes m ellitus and persistent depression increases the severity of type 2 diabetes mellitus. As per the research findings of Cheung and Li (2012), diabetes and hypertension frequently occur together. They are of the opinion that there is substantial overlap between diabetes and hypertension in etiology and disease mechanisms and increase in hypertension leads to increase in severity of diabetes mellitus or vice-versa. Moreover, he still smokes 20 cigarettes per day for which further resulted in uncontrolled condition of hypertension high blood pressure making him susceptible towards developing chronic cardiac anomalies in the near future (Pan et al., 2015). Peter Mitchell has not followed the diet plan provided by his dietician and this might be another reason behind his high gain in weight (Markwald et al., 2013). The third step of clinical reasoning cycle is processing of information (Audtat et al, 2013). Two important connections that are found in the case study are uncontrolled type diabetes mellitus and weight gain. The scenario is significant because of high abnormal weight, high blood pressure. Name of the condition Patient parameter Normal parameter Weight 145 kg in respect to 170 cms of height 60 to 72 Kg Blood pressure 180/92 120/80 The main gaps in the cue is whether Peter Mitchell is a addicted to any kind special diet plan (fat rich or sweet rich) which has further acted as a catalysts towards the high gain in weight. Moreover, the information is relation to gastro oesophageal disease reflux disease (GERD) seems irrelevant under this context because, here the focus is diabetes and obesity. According to Chen, Magliano and Zimmet (2012), there is no direct relation behind the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus or its associated weight gain with GERD. So the main identified problems, which is the fourth step of the clinical reasoning cycle include poor quality of life along with lack of self-awareness along and depression arising out of social isolation. Establishment of goals and setting of action plans is the fifth and sixth steps of clinical reasoning cycle. From the case study, it can be clearly stated that although Peter is well aware of his urgent weight loss requirement, he suffers from lack of confidence and determination which is required towards adapting different weight loss weight loss intervention. Proper health literacy along with a detailed weight loss regime will help Peter to understand from where he should start his weight loss regime. Moreover, proper education in the domain of type 2 diabetes mellitus will further help Peter to understand that his severe obesity is the driving force behind his poorly controlled diabetes and thereby helping him to work towards self-management programs (Khunti et al., 2012). This education should be given in the form of proper oration, lectures with creative posters or presentations along with proper counselling with Peter in one-to-one scenario in order to educate him while analysi s his understanding gaps (Khunti et al., 2012). A proper diabetes educator must also be assigned as he will help Peter to learn how to measure is blood glucose level while educating his about proper administration of insulin in order to keep in BGL level under the normal bracket (Khunti et al., 2012). Peter also needs assistance towards reducing his escalated smoking habits. A substance abuse counsellor is the best person for Peter to help him stay motivated and live enthusiastic to lead to smoking free life. Nicotine replacement therapy (NCT) will be best suited for Peter. According to Stead et al. (2012), NCT is found to provide best possible outcome with the patients having addiction towards chain smoking. Decrease in smoking tendency will help to reduce the severity of diabetes mellitus and obesity and thereby improving quality of life (Pan et al., 2015; Tian et al., 2015). The second priority of care in case Peter Mitchell is social isolation. It is highlighted in the case study that Peter is divorcee and lives alone and his sons rarely visit him. Moreover, he is embarrassed with his body size and thus refuses to socialise. The condition of Peter Mitchell is accordance with the findings of Steptoe et al. (2013). Teo (2013) further opined that social isolation generates loneliness and this loneliness generates a sense of depression as in case of Peter Mitchell. Depression arising out of social isolation eventually gives rise to significant morbidity and mortality and hence priority of care (Steptoe et al. 2013). The main nursing interventions in order to reduce the sense of depression among Peter Mitchell will be generation of acceptance and awareness of self. Awareness of self will be done via providing a detailed insight about his physical appearance and how he can fight the same. Peter should be advised to perform free-hand exercise initially for 10 minutes and then gradually increasing the tenure of exercise regime. This exercise will be done in groups composed of other groups of people who are also trying to fight against their obesity. According to Tilvis et al. (2012), performing group task increase a sense of self-confidence and helps individuals to socialise and thereby helping to reduce depression. In this exercise class, Peters entire mental (psychologist) and physical health conditions (primary care providers) will be checked and diabetic diet along with exercises will be recommended accordingly. This type of care is popularly known as collaborative care (Archer et al., 2012). Archer et al. (2012) further opined that residing amidst same group of people who are also suffering from identical problems, gives the patient a metal and thus reducing social isolation. Moreover, weight loss helps in psychological improvements, helping to gain personal confidence and thereby increasing social participation (Staiano, Abraham Ca lvert, 2013). Gillen et al. (2012), further opined that interval exercise helps to reduce postprandial glucose response and thereby reducing the prevalence of hyperglycaemia among the patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The last two steps of clinical reasoning cycle is evaluation and reflection stage. Here Peter would be asked to fix appointments with the nearby healthcare centres once in a month so that the healthcare professionals can evaluate how the health parameters of Peter is improving and how Peter is abiding by the healthy lifestyle regime. This monthly evaluation of Peters health parameter will help the healthcare professionals to understand the effectiveness of the weightless strategies and diet plan implemented on Peter and simultaneously work on the same towards further improvement (Prezio et al., 2013). The evaluation will also be based on the assessment of the depression; here Peter will be accessed on the parameter of how his social participation has increased and whether he is open to participate in community activities (Prezio et al., 2013). Thus from the above discussion, it can be concluded that clinical reasoning cycle is an important tool that help the healthcare professionals to determining the priority of nursing care among the patients with chronic disease. In the case study, proper education about the disease and interventions for the maintenance of healthy lifestyle are considered two most prioritise care for Peter who was suffering from prolong period of diabetes mellitus and morbid obesity. Thomas Jefferson Essays (1527 words) - Thomas Jefferson,

Thomas Jefferson Thomas Jefferson Thomas Jefferson symbolizes the promise and the contradictions of Americas historical heritage. As the third president of the United States, a diplomat, plantation owner, architect, scientist, and philosopher, he is one of the most important figures in American history. The writings of Thomas Jefferson are today more meaningful than ever before in Americas history. You could reach into your pocket, pull out a nickel and find him gazing into the middle distance. Jefferson was born on April 13 (April 2, Old Style), 1743, at Shadwell, the most important of the tobacco plantations owned by his father Peter Jefferson, in the Virginia upcountry. An intelligent man, although educated, Peter Jefferson became a successful surveyor, landowner, and member of the Virginia House of Burgesses from Albemarle County. His wife Jane Randolph, a member of one of the most distinguished Virginia families. As a child, he enjoyed to the full the advantages of his familys position in life: the books, the ho rses, and the good life of the Big Houses at Tuckahoe and Shadwell. When his father died he left his fourteen-year-old son with not only valuable lands and property but the inheritance of Virginia wealth as well as loving and caring advise. Thomas not formally educated himself; he studied at Revered Mr. Maurys school, not far from Shadwell. After two years in the spring of 1760, he left his native Albemarle to attend William and Mary College. Jefferson gives evidence of enjoying to the party scene: the music, the dancing, the flirtations, and the punch drinking. After graduating from William and Mary in the spring of 1762, Jefferson studied law five years under George Wythe. Knowledge of the law is essential to an understanding of governmental procedures. He became a successful lawyer starting his career. When Jefferson was turning thirty he started his political career. In January of 1772, he had married Martha Wayles Skelton. After being married, they moved to Monticello, not far from his old home in Shadwell, this had been destroyed by fire in 1770. Jefferson arrived in Philadelphia in June 1775 as a Virginia delegate to the Second Continental Congress; he already possessed, as John Adams remarked. A reputation for literature, science, and a happy talent of composition. When he returned a later, he was appointed to the five- man committee, including Benjamin Franklin and John Adams. Which is the most important assignment ever given in the history of America: the drafting of a formal declaration of independence from Great Britain. Jefferson had the responsibility of preparing the draft, and was finally approved on July 4, 1776. By the age of thirty-three, his reputation had grown. Returning to the Virginia House of Delegates in October 1776, Jefferson at once set to work on a carefully planned reform of the laws of Virginia. He introduced a bill to reorganize the courts of justice. Jefferson made the most of his opportunity to modernize the body of the law. He surveyed the whole field of education, and proposed a systematic plan of statewide education. He attempted to write religious toleration into the laws of Virginia by separating Church and State; when the Bill for establishing Religious Freedom was finally passed in 1785, he considered it a major contribution to American society. In June of 1779, he was elected Governor of Virginia. Jefferson took up his duties at a time when the British were raiding Virginia; in control of the sea, they could send forth-plundering parties to capture food and ammunition, and destroy. Jefferson himself escaped capture at the hands of troops by Colonel Tarleton. In June of 1781 he had injured his wrist and was unable to ride for some time. During this period, he wrote to Marquis de Marbois, Secretary of the French Legation at Philadelphia. The observations Jefferson had been making for years about the surrounding country, its climate, its natural beauties, minerals, waterways, agriculture, and gove rnment. The manuscript was later the Notes of Virginia. In September 1782, Jeffersons wife ill since the birth of their last daughter died. Shortly after in June 1783, the General Assembly of Virginia elected Jefferson as a delegate to the Confederation Congress where he again headed important committees, drafted man

A Brave Black Regiment History of the Massachusetts 54th Volunteer Infantry Regiment

A Brave Black Regiment History of the Massachusetts 54th Volunteer Infantry Regiment Introduction â€Å"A Brave Black Regiment: History of the Massachusetts 54th Volunteer Infantry Regiment† by Luis Emilio tells the history of one of the most famous infantry regiments ever to serve in any American War. It primarily consisted of black soldiers who were led by white officers, and they provided valuable service to the Union Army during the American Civil War.Advertising We will write a custom book review sample on A Brave Black Regiment: History of the Massachusetts 54th Volunteer Infantry Regiment specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More It was one of the first black combat units assembled in the Northern States so there was a lot of interest and curiosity surrounding it. At a time when there was a lot of debate about the suitability of using blacks for armed combat, its performance was always going to be closely monitored, and the outcome would have a significant bearing on the fate of blacks in the army and the country as a whole. There were so many negative perceptions surrounding blacks serving in the army around this time but this only served to foster a sense of unity and determination amongst the black soldiers and their white officers, which spurred them to fight gallantly in the battles that they were involved in as a unit. History of Formation The outbreak of the Civil War saw many free black men volunteer to enlist in the U.S. military but there was a 1792 law in place that barred colored people from serving in the military. With the Union forces suffering a series of heavy military defeats, and fewer white men volunteering to join the army, Congress repealed the 1792 law in 1862 and passes a Militia Act that gave the president powers to employ blacks in any military or naval service. In March 1863, the then Governor of Massachusetts, John A. Andrew authorized the formation of the regiment and personally picked Colonel Robert Gould Shaw to command the unit[1]. The recruitment process was mainly done by white abolitionists, including Colonel Shaw’s parents, with the help of prominent black abolitionists like Frederick Douglass whose two sons were amongst the recruits. The unit trained at Camp Meigs in Reedville, near Boston under the close supervision of white soldiers. The 54th left Boston in May 1863, ready to do battle for the union, but were initially used to provide manual labor behind the frontlines. They tasted their first battlefield action when they stopped a Confederate assault in July the same year. Pay Disputes Author Luis Emilio clearly documents how the black soldiers of the 54th regiment were discriminated against in terms of payment for military service. During recruitment, they were promised salaries and allowances equal to that being paid to the white soldiers, which was $13 a month at that time. Instead, the black soldiers were paid $10 per month, and still $3 from this were withheld for clothing, meaning they took home only $7 per month[2] .Advertising Looking for book review on history? Colonel Shaw, the white officers and the black soldiers of the 54th regiment boycotted collecting their pay until this matter was addressed. Congress eventually enacted legislation that granted equal pay to black soldiers in June 1864. A Lasting Legacy The 54th regiment was disbanded after the end of the Civil War, but it left an indelible mark in history. The black soldiers of the 54th and in other units played a crucial role in helping the union achieve victory in the war. The black soldiers were tough, resilient and brave, and they fought with a lot of determination. A monument was constructed in their honor in 1884-1898 on the Boston Common and is part of the Boston Black Heritage Trail. Colonel Shaw died in battle, and was buried in the trenches alongside the other black soldiers who suffe red the same fate. Shaw’s parents supported this, as they felt that their son deserved to lie amongst his soldiers that he had led so valiantly in battle. The 54th regiment also produced the first black man to win the Medal of Honor. Sgt. William H. Carney of Company C received this recognition for exceptional bravery on the battlefront in which he risked his life openly to save their flag. The spreading news of heroics of the 54th regiment led to more blacks enlisting for service in the army in many other units all over the country. Conclusion In writing â€Å"A Brave Black Regiment: History of the Massachusetts 54th Volunteer Infantry Regiment†, Luis Emilio documents a very important turning point in America’s history that paved the way to the acceptance of blacks as first class American citizens, enjoying all the freedoms and privileges like their white counterparts. Black leaders pushed strongly for the recruitment of black troops since it presented the perf ect opportunity for the black man to prove his courage and patriotism on the battlefield. The nation would be obligated to grant them first class citizenship if they participated in the war to defend their territory. When President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, blacks got their chance to fight for full citizenship. The Civil War become about more than preserving the Union; it became the war of freedom for all American people, both white and black. The role played by the black soldiers of the 54th regiment, and all the black soldiers who fought in the war, helped speed up the general acceptance of black people as true American citizens.Advertising We will write a custom book review sample on A Brave Black Regiment: History of the Massachusetts 54th Volunteer Infantry Regiment specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Bibliography Emilio, Luis. History response 11 Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

History response 11 - Assignment Example anticipated that Castro was someone he may well work with, since Cuban leader explored New York and Washington seeking both public and official support. But affiliations deteriorated after the Cuba’s Agrarian transformation rule nationalized land possessed by American firms. Both corporate lobbyists and Cold War hawks soon portrayed Castro as a Soviet threat on America’s doorstep. As tensions increased, Castro sent Che Guevara to Moscow and Beijing to shore up support for his regime while the Eisenhower administration drew up plans for invasion. Having this and Che being a Chinese collaborator, the relations between China and Britain melted. At present day, therefore, the medium of exchange has changed to numerous mediums unlike opium which was used in the former years by china and Britain(Goscha et al 7). ` The Great Leap scheme that was founded by Mao’s authority was unsuccessful. The steel formed in small shared furnaces was practically ineffective coupled with food production that plunged since many people died in the scarcity that resulted. By 1961 the collapse of the Great Leap Forward guided the more realistic â€Å"experts† in the Communist Party to lessen Mao’s authority slowly while renewing rationality to financial preparation (Goscha et al 30). Yet still, Mao’s conviction in the power of ground-breaking eagerness would inspire a younger age group of revolutionaries. Guevara was amongst those involved in the Chinese replica as an option to both free enterprise (capitalism) and the heavy Soviet form of technocratic communism (Goscha et al 41). This shows both a good example of youth culture as seen in schemes that he formed and also a bad instance on the youth, signified by his failures on food

Irish Literature in English Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Irish Literature in English - Essay Example To what extent those pendulum movements characterize Irish literary identity With the rise of nationalism in Europe, the Irish nation sought to re-discover its own distinct culture, which had progressively been erased by the English hegemony over the Irish territory. While successive British governments had ignored Irish culture and language, the creation of the Irish Free State in 1922 allowed new possibilities for the nation to re-discover its forgotten cultural roots. To claim itself a nation-state, Ireland needed to find itself a true national identity (see B. Anderson 2000). As a consequence, national heroes (like Parnell), icons, symbols and traditions embodying national ideals, and the promotion of Irish past history and language, became new standards for self-definition of the nation. Literature obviously had to play an important role in the promotion of this new Irish national identity. The Irish Literary Revival, founded by William Butler Yeats, sought into Irish myths and folklore to discover or re-invent the true roots of Irish identity and get rid of colonialist stereotypes. This created a new Irish literature, developing along nostalgic visions of old rural Ireland (before industrialization) and adapting oral folklore to written narration. However, most poems and plays by Yeats were written in English, revealing a true miscegenation of cultures within the texts. Whereas Yeats' works reworked Irish myths and folklore, the strong influence of Percy Bysshe Shelley unveiled an English "shadow" on his texts. Yeats and the movement that he founded showed a strong will to take distance from the English culture, yet this defiance only proved that the English culture served as a landmark for the creation of an Irish national culture and literary tradition, hence showing that the English influence could never be totally erased. Minority voices versus Irish national literary conventions. Irish nationalists' striving for the recognition of Irish traditions indirectly conveyed a political message (to claim independence), so as to invent an intrinsic antithesis, the concept of "un-Irishness". Ignoring the new Irish national conventions, led by the Celtic Revival, came to be considered as an act of defiance against national standards, and authors who chose to criticize the national narrow conception of "Irishness" indirectly accepted (or sought) an ideological exile from the mainstream. Irish authors who showed a tough scepticism vis--vis new national standards, like James Joyce or Samuel Beckett, were in fact adopting an escape distance from the turbulent issues during the modern era. Writers chose a more peaceful way to deal with the Irish identity, through writing. They considered that re-inventing national traditions had paradoxically erased the liberty that Irish people were so much seeking on their

Raw Materials as Biofuel Pellets Essay Example for Free

Raw Materials as Biofuel Pellets Essay In the Philippines, forests and woodlands cover about 7,168,400 hectares (http://forestry.denr.gov.ph). These forests have unique environmental and biodiversity values, and make available a wide range of products for subsistence use. The most predominant use of wood is in the form of firewood and charcoal by the majority of Filipinos in both rural and urban areas. Firewood is preferred in rural areas simply because it is obtainable free of charge. Charcoal is preferred in urban areas on account of its being cheap, easy to transport, distribute and store. It is almost smokeless and has higher calorific value A(30 MJ/kg) than firewood (15MJ/kg). But according to the U.N. FAO (2003), the woodlands have experienced highest rates of degradation and deforestation compared to other cover classes. This could be attributed to selective cutting for timber and clear felling of trees for both charcoal production and cultivation. Charcoal production is responsible for degradation and deforestation.Between 1990 and 2010, the Philippines lost an average of 54,750 ha or 0.83% of forested area per year. Charcoal production and cultivation have an impact on large-scale deforestation that has occurred in the area between 1991 and 1998. Philippine Government is also in trouble as environmental sanitation is concerned. Waste materials in markets or even in public places continually piled up every other day when it is not fetched by a garbage truck. These waste materials are primarily composed of coconut shells in markets, wastepaper in schools and offices, rice hulls in agricultural remains and sawdust, a waste product produce in the lumber shops. This study was conducted to reduce the percentage breakdown of deforestation which would soon contribute to the prevalent global warming. Since waste materials such as coconut shells, rice hulls, sawdust and wastepaper are totally organic and may seem useful at times, we came up on using it as a primary component in making Biofuel at varying formulations. This way, the researchers can help in preserving the environmental balance of the ecosystem and at the same time, to come up with a cheap, easy-drying and a highly combustible fuel for household fuel – The Biofuel Pellets. Statement of the Problem This study aimed to determine whether different formulations of coconut shells, rice hulls, sawdust and wastepapercan be a viable source of Biofuel in the form of Pellets. Specific Objectives: This study specifically aimed to answer the following inquiries: 1. To determine the heating values of each raw materials to be used in making the biofuel pellets. 2. To determine the heating values of the biofuel pellets at varying coconut shells: rice hull: sawdust: wastepaper ratios and the wood charcoal as the positive control. 3. To determine if there is a significant difference on the heating value of Formulation 1, Formulation 2, Formulation 3, Formulation 4 and the positive control. 4. To determine the relationship between the size and the heating value of varying formulations and the positive control. 5. To determine the boiling time of biofuel pellets when biofuel pellets at varying formulations and wood charcoal are used as fuels. 6. To determine if there is a significant difference on the boiling time of Formulation 1, Formulation 2, Formulation 3, Formulation 4 and the positive control. 7. To determine the relationship between the size and the boiling time of varying formulations and the positive control. 8. To determine the density of biofuel pellets at varying formulations and the wood charcoal. 9. To determine if there is a significant differenceon the density of Formulation 1, Formulation 2, Formulation 3, Formulation 4 and the positive control. 10. To determine the relationship between the size and the density of varying formulations and the positive control. Hypothesis of the Study This study aimed to determine whether the mixture of waste paper products and materials, and coconut shell can be a viable source of bioethanol. Specifically, this study aimed to determine if there is an existing significant difference, in terms of the percentage of bioethanol produced, between the pure waste paper mixture, pure pulverized coconut shell, and 1:1 ratio mixture of waste paper and pulverized coconut. This study hypothesized that there will be no existing significant difference, in terms of the percentage of bioethanol produced, between the pure waste paper mixture, pure pulverized coconut shell, and 1:1 ratio mixture of waste paper and pulverized coconut. Schematic Diagram Independent Variables Dependent Variables Formulation 1 150g coconut shells, 150g rice hull; 150g, saw dust , 50g paper Formulation 2 225g coconut shells, 112.5g rice hull, 112.5g sawdust, 50g waste paper Boiling Time (minutes) Formulation 3 112.5g coconut shells, 225g rice hull, 112.5g saw dust, 50g waste paper Burning Time (minutes) Formulation 4 112.5g coconut shells, 112.5g rice hull, 225g saw dust, 50g waste paper Density (g/ mL) Positive Group: Wood Charcoal Figure 1.A diagram showing the relationship between the independent variables and the dependent variables Significance of the Study The findings of this study would greatly benefit the various sectors, primarily the following: Community Residences. Since it takes a lot of time to dry those wood charcoal that is traditionally used by countless homes in the community, this study could be a good source of an alternative fuel in household cooking chores. First, it is well-accessible to use anytime, with less worries of its dryness when used and lastly, it could be conveniently used in any cooking activities because of its high combustibility, since Biofuel pellets are primarily composed of combustible materials. Energy Sector. The promising friendly fuel from biofuel production could help the energy deficit of the energy sector; thus sustaining not only the demand of the consumers but also the need of the environment to have a green and amicable energy source. Environmental Sector. This study could help reduce the amount of pollution to the environment by simply using organic waste products and converting it into an environment friendly source of fuel. Other Researchers. This study could benefit other researchers by using this study as a reference for future researches. Scope and Limitation of the Study This study was conducted on July 12, 2012 until August 4, 2012 at the Negros Occidental High School Physics and Chemistry Laboratory. The waste materials that were used in this study were coconut shells, rice hulls, sawdust and wastepaper. The coconut shells were obtained from different stalls at Libertad Market, rice hulls were from Agricultural waste during post-harvest, and sawdust was from lumber shops while the Wastepaper was a total combination of that in Offices and Schools. The study limited itself in the determination of the heating values and the most effective formulation of waste materials that could be a viable alternative for wood charcoals. In addition, this study did not include the cost analysis based from the probable costs that may arise during the experimentation process. However, utmost economic optimization was employed during the materials selection and Biofuel pellets production. Definition of Terms Boiling time. Allotted time in which phase transition of the substance turns from the liquid state to the gas state, usually occurring when a liquid is heated to its boiling point (http://chemistry.about.com). In this study, boiling point was used as one of the parameters of this study. Burning Time.the time during which the propellant charge of a fuel is fully consumed (merriam-webster.com). In this study, the burning time was used as one of the parameters during the experimentation of the study. Coconut. A member of the family Arecaceae (palm family). It is the only accepted species in the genus Cocos. The term coconut can refer to the entire coconut palm, the seed, or the fruit, which is not a botanical nut (apps.kew.org). In this study, the coconut was one of the raw materials in the process of fuel pellet production. Density. The quantity of something per unit measure, especially per unit length, area, or volume or the mass per unit volume of a substance under specified conditions of pressure and temperature (thefreedictionary.com) In this study, density was used as one of the parameters during the experiment. Fuel Pellets. A piece of fuel usually in the shape of a sphere or cylinder, used in pebble-bed reactors, inserted in graphite blocks, or used in metallic tubular fuel elements (www.thefreedictionary.com). In this study, fuel pellets was the product of the study conducted. Heating Value. Amount of heat produced from the complete combustion of a specific amount of fuel (www.businessdictionary.com). In this study, heating value was used as one of the parameters in this study. Rice hull. The dry outer covering of a rice grain; a husk (www.thefreedictionary.com). In this study, the rice hull was pulverized and used as one of the materials in the process of fuel pellet production. Sawdust. The small particles of wood or other material that fall from an object being sawed (http://education.yahoo.com). In this study, sawdust was used as one of the raw materials for the fuel pellet production. Waste papers.Paper that is not needed and has been thrown away (Encarta Dictionaries, 2008). In this study, the waste paper was used as a raw material for fuel pellet production.

Editorial On Drinking :: essays research papers

I walked into the house where the "party of the century" was going to be held. I was psyched to be going. At the time I was a little naive freshman invited to my first official high school party at a senior’s house. I was at the party no more than 30 minutes when this boy offered me a drink. Thinking nothing of it, I agreed. He brought back a half-filled cup. Before I took a sip, I recognized a familiar smell, one I really couldn’t my finger on. It wasn’t Pepsi and I knew it wasn’t Sprite. Then it hit me, I was being offered alcohol. I was only a freshman, and I was being offered a glass of alcohol. My first glass of alcohol. I could not believe it. Was this what growing up meant? Being able to drink and do exactly what my parents and teachers had been telling me not to do for as long as I could remember? I looked around the room, and saw other people drinking the same stuff, then I saw them stumbling around, and some were in the corner puking. This never happens to the people on the beer commercials on TV, why should it happen to these kids? As I saw these people, my peers, the truth finally hit me, alcohol isn’t for teenagers, no matter what the commercials say. Not only does alcohol make you look ridiculous, it’s illegal for people my age to be drinking. In a survey conducted by the Associated Press in 1998, almost half of the American teenagers were drinkers. This same substance I had been told to refuse my entire childhood was being consumed by nearly half of my peers. According to that same survey, nearly 9 out of 10 teenagers between the ages of 16 and 19 years of age had their first alcoholic beverage after their 11th birthday. At this point, was I suppose to become a statistic or be that one out of ten people who doesn’t use alcohol? In D.A.R.E., the drug education program children are taught up until they enter high school, they always tell you to â€Å"Just Say No†, but I bet they have no clue what goes through the mind of naive teenagers who see all of their peers having a â€Å"great time† while they try to be the good kid and refuse.

Personal Financial Plan

Personal Financial Plan Part 5 Sheri Mulder Personal Finance Age 30 Establish good credit and avoid excessive debt Invest aggressively for retirement Buy a first home and build equity Make a will and health directives Age 30-45 Create an estate plan. Buy adequate life and disability insurance. Keep investing as much as possible. Save for children's college. Age 45-65 Leverage peak earning years to build financial security. Shift retirement savings as necessary. Review estate plans regularly as assets grow and to reflect changing life circumstances. Age 65 and beyondAppropriately rebalance assets to manage risk. Take action to minimize estate taxes and facilitate wealth transfer to descendants. Make sure health insurance is adequate. What was used to help establish the personal financial plan was a website that had an example of a financial plan considering life-stage changes. The example was helpful because it showed different ages of an individual's life and what should be done duri ng those stages. The example was helpful to use because the example is very similar to the situation and life style changes that are becoming an issue. The financial resources that would be used to help make financial decisions would be to get a loan from the bank for a mortgage. Taking out a bank loan would only be used if there was a large amount of money needed and there was not enough saved up to use. It is important to have a nest egg to fall back on in case of emergencies so an individual does not have to use financial resources to get him or her out an emergency situation. Short-Term Goals Finishing college Increasing savings account Purchasing a new vehicle Reducing high interest debt Buy life insurance Make plans for retirementIntermediate-Term Goals Paying off expensive debt Creating an emergency fund to cover 12 months of expenses Buying a new car Taking special vacation Long-Term Goals Own a home free of mortgage payments Own a vacation home in the mountains somewhere rem ote Accumulate enough funds to not have to work, but maybe something part time in case I get bored My personal risk tolerance is very conservative at this current moment of life. Although my time horizon has many years to invest, right now the asset level is not high enough to have very much left to invest. My risk olerance is also conservative because of lack of experience and knowledge of investing. In the future when there is a higher asset level, there could be a possibility of hiring a professional to help with an investment. My time horizon impacts my financial plan because of how many years that there is left before retirement. The number of years that an individual has before retirement is important to determine how to invest and save money. By the time of graduation, there should be close to forty years to take on risky investments. There will also be forty years to load a portfolio with bonds and cash. The Power Of Good And Evil in Flannery OConnors A Good...

The Power Of Good And Evil in Flannery OConnors A Good Man is Hard to Find Good and bad. Right and wrong. Guilty and Innocent. These are just a few of the many themes that surround everyones life. Everyone has their own opinion about certain issues, and they depend on their values, judgment, and beliefs to see them through their difficulties. Flannery OConnor was quoted as saying I see from the standpoint of Christian orthodoxy. This means the meaning of life is centered in our Redemption by Christ and that what I see in the world I see in relation to that (Contemporary Authors 402). These themes are present in OConnors story A Good Man is Hard to Find. The story is about a grandmother, a good woman who goes on†¦show more content†¦. . . Her writing is about the existential struggle with the principle of destruction traditionally called the Devil (Contemporary Authors 403). The day of the trip Grandma is the first packed and ready to go. She does not want to leave the cat because as she says, he would miss her too much (O?Connor 907). This comment would suggest that the grandmother thinks highly of herself and is believes she is the most important person in the family. While everyone else is in comfortable travel clothes, Grandma is dressed formally. She had on a navy blue straw sailor hat with a bunch of white violets on the brim and a navy dress with a small white dot in the print (O?Connor 907). Both incidents are prime examples that show the grandmother?s behavior. We see that the grandmother is selfish and uncaring. She claims that she is a good person, yet she criticizes everyone and always wants to get her way. She hides the cat and lies about it to her son; she did not consider how anyone would feel about her bringing the cat. Yet, on the other hand she is very concerned with social opinion. She is dressed nicely, her excuse is that in case of an accident anyone seeing her dead on the highway would know that she was a lady (O?Connor 907). This shows that the grandmother was very concerned with people?s opinion. She acted proper, had strong virtues, values; a good woman in her view. But she was a self- centered person who judged others harshly, so that she would look good.Show MoreRelated Flannery OConnors A Good Man is Hard To Find Essay1144 Words   |  5 PagesFlannery O’Connor’s A Good Man Is Hard to Find is one of the most well-known short stories in American history. Taxation Indirect Sources and Resident

Question: Describe about the Taxation for Indirect Sources and Resident. Answer: 1:-Tax Consequences of Mary Jackson:- Mary Jackson is assumed to be an Australian resident and all her incomes, earned from direct or indirect sources within or outside Australia are assessable under Australian Taxation Act. Mary is an employee under Elite Retail and ordinary source of income is mainly the salary and other allowances, paid by her employee (Anthoine 2013). Apart from the salary and allowances, her employee provides her other benefits also. Benefits, provided by the employee, are also taxable for the individual taxpayer. However, some of the benefits are not considered as assessable income and she can claim deductions against some of the deductions and allowances (Arthur 2016). The tax consequences of Mary Jackson for the salary, allowances and benefits, received by her, are discussed below: 1) The annual salary of Mary is fully taxable. 2) The expenses for transfer of furniture, paid by her employer, are taxable also. However, she cannot claim any deduction for the actual expenses, incurred for transferring the furniture (Baos-Caballero et al. 2014). 3) Elite Retail has given the laptop and mobile phone to Mary for work purpose. The costs of these items will not be considered as taxable for Sharon. 4) The telephone bill of Mary, paid by her employer, will be considered as fringe benefit for Mary and should be included in her taxable income. She can claim deduction for the 50% of the telephone bill, as 50% of the telephone usage was work related (Bull 2014). 5) The car was provided to Mary for work purpose. Therefore, it will not be considered for taxable income and any deductions will not be entitled to Mary for the car expenses also. 6) The allowance, received by Mary, for covering professional subscription is an assessable income. However, she can claim deduction for the actual payment, made for professional subscription (Burkhauser et al. 2015). 7) The loan, given at lower interest rate by the employer, is a fringe benefit. In this case, Mary has taken loan from her employer at lower rate. Therefore, the difference between the actual interest and interest, payable at benchmark rate, is assessable for taxation of Mary. However, she can claim deduction on the actual interest on the loan, as the loan was used for financing new property (Danis et al. 2014). Tax Consequences for Elite Retails:- Being an employer, Elite Retails can claim deductions for the expenses, incurred for the employees and other benefits, provided to the employees (Headey et al. 2012). However, the expenses should be claim for deductions under different sections as per the nature of the expenses. The details of allowable deductions are discussed below: 1) Salaries wages, paid by any employer, is deductible as work related expenses for taxation purpose. The company can claim deduction for Marys annual salary as work related expense from the taxable income (Taylor and Richardson 2012). 2) The expenses, paid by the company, for transfer of Marys Furniture is a living away from home allowance fringe benefit, which is paid to employees for the additional expenses, incurred in case of transfer. The company is entitled to claim this expense as a fringe benefit (Hung et al. 2013). 3) Expenses, incurred for entertainment, is not considered for deductions in case of the companies. However, in some scenarios, the companies can claim deduction for the entertainment expenses, incurred for clients, as entertainment fringe benefits (Tauringana and Adjapong Afrifa 2013). If Mary incurred the entertainment allowance entirely for the clients and fulfilled the conditions, required for entertainment fringe benefits, then, the company can claim deduction for such allowances (Jiang and Junmin 2015). 4) The costs of laptop and mobile phone provided to Mary, can be claimed by the company as work related expenses. 5) The phone bill, paid on behalf of Mary, is an expense payment fringe benefit. The company can claim this benefit fully. 6) The company can claim deduction against the expenses, incurred for the car, provided to the employee for her private or employment purpose. However, the company can claim for the operating or running expenses of the car only (Kiyotaki and Moore 2012). In the case study, no such expenses are mentioned. Hence, in this case, the company will be allowed deduction for the depreciation on the car as car expenses. 7) The allowance, paid to Mary for covering professional subscription, can be claimed as deduction under residual fringe benefit. 8) If the employer provides loan to employer at lower rate in comparison to benchmark interest rate, then it will be considered as loan fringe benefit. In this case, Elite Retail can claim deduction for the loan, provided to Mary also as loan fringe benefit (Taylor and Richardson 2013). 2:- Net Capital Profit under Normal Circumstances:- Scott is deemed a resident of Australia who is not involved in real estate trading. For this reason, the land and thee buildings are deemed his personal possession other than the trading stocks. The capital gain or loss generated from sale of Scotts building, this is computed based on the below mentioned aspects: The land was purchased before the date of 20 September 1985. For this reason, it can be considered to be a pre CGT asset as well as the lands sale will remain exempted under the taxation regulations of CGT (Krever and Mellor 2016). The building was constructed after the date 20 September 1985 and for the reason it must be considered as asset under post CGT asset. This will be computed based on the proportionate price of selling of just the building. Considering this, the buildings price of selling is deemed to be $320000 [$800000 x $60000/($60000+$90000)]. For the reason that the building was constructed before the year 20 September 1999, the buildings cost base might be determined in account to the indexation technique. Conversely, considering Scott as an individual it can be stated that he can be capable to apply discounted technique for computation of net CGT (Rognlie 2016). In this scenario, he must compute CGT under the two methods and chosen technique, this will result in decreased amount of tax. In consideration to the aforementioned aspects, the net capital loss or gain on the rental property sale that is computed under: Name of Taxpayer : Scott Type : Individual Calculation of Net Capital Gain/Loss for the period ending on 30th June,2016 Discounted Method Indexation Method Particulars Amount Amount Amount Amount $ $ $ $ a) Sale of Holiday Home : Sales Consideration 320000 320000 Less : Cost Base of the Property 60000 97055 Capital Gain on Sale 260000 222945.4 Less : 50% Exemption on Capital Gain 130000 Taxable Capital Gain (A) 130000 222945 Considering the above table, it is observed that Fred needs to pay decreased tax if he implements discounted technique. For this reason, the net capital gain of Freds rental property sales for the recent year s observed to be $130000. Net Capital Profit under Alternative Solution 1:- In case Scott decides to sell its property at a decreased price to his daughter, then the consideration of the sales for the purpose of taxation will be realized based on the acquired propertys value within market. Considering that, the property was decided to be sold at an auction, for this reason, the selling price on auction can be observed to remain under the buildings market price (Plummer 2016). In such scenario, the property sales net capital profit to his daughter will remain identical as above. Cultural Conservation Essay Example For Students

Cultural Conservation Essay One problem with Cultural Conservation Essay: To put it simply, and its not a problems that only conservatives very often confuse (or conflate ethics and aesthetics. When Gertrude Himmererfarf lambastes out (as she perceives it) amoral, sexually deviant and polymorpously perverse culture she is primarily responding to something that she finds culturally foreign and aesthetically threatening. I agree with her that values are oftentimes a good thing, but only when they are born of an ethical and pragmatic perspective, not an aesthetic one. The conservatives want a seemingly neat and compartment society wherein stable appearances are maintained and archaic cultural archetypes are adhered to religiously. I grew up in a world of cultural archetypes. I grew up with white businessmen going to office buildings while their wives stayed at home and their kids went to school. or , more accurately, I grew up with alcoholic, adulterous business men who lives culturally insular lives while their wives took sedatives and smoked cigarettes and vented their frustrations on there kids, and these same kids took reams of drugs, got abortions, drove drunk, and victimized the weaklings. I grew up in what most conservatives would consider a utopia; lots of money, prestige, cultural cohesion, and good conservative values. But their values were in fact aesthetics, and maintaining these aesthetics ruled and ruined their lives. Almost everyone in this suburban bourgeoisie system hated their lives, but because they had been brought up to worship aesthetic myths they felt that to question them was an admission of personal failure. What are these myths? theyre old and platitudinal but Ill trot on them again: thats money makes you happy, that society is right and that poverty is bad, that maintaining convention in every aspect of your life is the ultimate good, that aberrance from these ideas is sin. ect. Im not going to say that the polar opposites of the clich;s is true, that would be one of the failings of the radical left. I believe that for the most part these criteria are irrelevant. Money can make life easier, but it also can make life miserable. Poverty can be bad but it can also be fine. Convention has some good points and some bad points. What it all comes down to is flexibility that should allow for the well being of the individual without compromising the rights of other individuals. When conservatives trot out their litany of evils-homosexuality, single parent families, multiculturalism, ect. Im always asking why?. If people are happy being gay then whets wrong with that? it may be a lifestyle thats aesthetically different from what weve been brought up with, but so what? and single parent families? better a loving single parent family than a conventional family wherein the parents hate each other and the father is a demagogue. One reason that we have such a wide variety of alternative lifestyles is that the conventional lifestyles that the conservatives champion are often quite flawed and restrictive. Restrictive mores can be terrific when applied to peoples violent impulses, but restrictiveness is terribly unhealthy when its used to get people to conform to arbitrate social archetypes. This restrictiveness can make people feel inadequate and inferior and it needs to be done away with. If someones gay, let them be gay. If your son wants to marry a black woman (or white or yellow or Muslim) then let the,. We need to love each other and support each other even if we choose to live in alternatives but harmless ways. Obviously if your son is a rapist or a wifebeater or a child molester then you need to question your support of his actions and values. Im not championing a retreat for responsibility. PRO-GAY MARRIAGE IN AMERICA Essay I believe that personal and social well being is built upon and foundation of hard work, loyalty, honesty, diligence, respect, tolerance, and other good values. But it doesnt matter what the cultural manifestation of the values looks like. It can be straight or gay or male or female or black or white or anything as long as its respectful and makes the practitioner feel well. So my advise to cultural conservatives (and others) would be to cultivate an approach to values based on principles rather than aesthetics. I would also like to say that any pronouncements on the values of others, especially pronouncements veering into the pre-scriptive realm, need to be cautious, pragmatic, logical and not just the typically hateful and reactionary vacuities that weve grown so accustomed to. .

Yoga Teachers Reveal Their Tips For Everyday Mindfulness

Yoga Teachers Reveal Their Tips For Everyday Mindfulness With so many distractions occupying our every thought these days, it's hard to concentrate on just one thing at a time or to even clear our minds at all, which is why mindfulness awareness is so invaluable. It's important to make some time for ourselves and to find stillness in our mindswithin a chaotic world, but it can be difficult to know where to start. We asked the below yoga teachers what their top tip would be for bringing mindfulness into everyday life. This list of expert tips is the perfect place to start for carrying out small but effective methods into your everyday routine which you can start implementing today. These tips are particularly great if you're a student and you're struggling concentrating on that exam revision or coping with University stress. Enjoy some well-deserved 'you' time! Taylor Harkness... a former paramedic now aiming to unite others through yoga and optimistic neuropsychology "Yogis' talk a lot about being mindful, and for good reason. It's so easy to get sucked out of the present, especially with our constant bombardment of stimulation these days. The human brain has a finite amount of cerebral capacity, and is estimated to be roughly equivalent to 56 bits of information per second. This is why it's very hard to focus on two people talking at once and nearly impossible to focus on three. Whenever I feel myselfspiralling, it's usually because I've lost my sense ofthe present -I'm either stressed about the future, concerned with the past or simply distracted. One of the best tips that I've come to live by is this: become more mindful by making it a habit and a routine to disconnect from technology during activities. For example, when you're having a conversation, practice not looking at your phone, tv, or computer. Instead, try noticing the color of the person's eyes, or the way that they smile. When eating a meal, focus on the aromas and flavors of the food and silence your cell phone. Stop multitasking and instead, do whatever you're currently doing one hundred percent. It takes time and practicebut it eventually becomes second nature. Less reliance upon and distraction by technology means more cerebral capacity for the present moment. Begin paying more attention to the things around you and watch how it permeates into the rest of your life." www.taylorharkness.comStephanie Spence... writer, adventurer, yoga teacher and screenwriter from California "Stay in the present moment, that's where power is. This is a skill that can be learned. Practice brings rewards. Build your appreciation muscle. What you focus on magnifies, so train yourself to focus on the good things in your life. Embrace your emotions! When you don't feel good, your emotions are letting you know that you are not aligned with joy and abundance, so stop the train of thoughts that brought you to this point and accept yourself and everything around you exactly as they are at this moment."Allie Flavio... born and raised Florida girl who loves the ocean, outdoors and all types of adventure "Gratitude Movement. A gratitude practice is a wonderful way to stay grounded, connected and humbled in times of stress. By recognizing the simple, yet profoundly incredible aspects of our lives, we can truly appreciate the rest of the madness. Wondering how to do this? Start a gratitude practice. Write down three things you're grateful for every damn day. Keep it simple, keep it light, keep it fun. It can literally be anything - your cup of coffee, the comfortable bed you sleep in, your outfit, your family and friends, the food you ate...truly, everything is fair game. A movement practice can also be anything, so long as you move, breathe, and feel yourself come alive. Whether you walk, run, do yoga, dance, rock climb, or swim, there's no wrong way to move. The only requirement is that you connect to you, your beautiful self, and the miracle that your body is! Just like the above practice - keep it simple, enjoy it, don't put too much pressure on it. Just move andmove every damn day!"www.thejourneyjunkie.comRandi Ragan... holistic wellbeing expert and speaker, mindfulness teacher, ceremonial guide and green living entrepreneur "I would urge young people to simply try and find moments they can build into each and every day, that allows them to pause, step back, center themselves and focus on their breathing to turn this pause into a sacred ritual of self-care that provides a bubble of uninterrupted, quiet focus. They don't have to be thinking of anything in particular in fact, to NOT think of anything but the present moment is the goal. Do this by becoming aware of how their breath feels, how their skin feels, how the air around them feels; what sounds they hear; to close their eyes and simply BE without ANY kind of distraction (here's looking at you technology!). I like to work the sacred number 108 into these pause rituals'. (108 is the number of mala beads on a Buddhist prayer necklace. It shows up in Yoga texts and ancient Hindu scriptures as well). Take 108 steps in a mindful walk, breath and meditate for 108 breaths or 1 minute and 8 seconds, count to 108 while listening to bird sounds, take your pause ritual at 1:08 pm every day, spend 1 hour and 8 minutes writing in your journal every week literally you can apply this number to anything that you want to set aside and make sacred as YOUR time to be mindful. The more the Pause Ritual is practiced, the more one appreciates its power, and the power to radically alter the way we live our lives on a daily basis. This is Mindfulness In Action!"www.randiragan.comAdam Husler... bringing something a little different to the yoga-mix A photo posted by Adam Husler (@adamhusler) on Jul 23, 2016 at 8:53am PDT [tcb-script async="" defer="" src="//platform.instagram.com/en_US/embeds.js"][/tcb-script] A photo posted by Adam Husler (@adamhusler) on Jul 20, 2016 at 5:31am PDT [tcb-script async="" defer="" src="//platform.instagram.com/en_US/embeds.js"][/tcb-script] "Take 5 to 10 minutes in the morning to simply sit. We spend far too much time thinking about the past or feeling anxious about the future. Stay focused during your practice, move with your breath and the rest will follow."www.sarahhighfield.comGwen Lawrence... yoga instructor andfounder of Power Yoga For Sports program "Learn diaphragmatic breathing. Simply learning to breath in and out through your nose only, utilizing the bodies natural filtration system (the nose) as well, the nose is built to warm or cool the entering air appropriately for full effectiveness for the body. Adding to that, diaphragmatic breathing means breathing in and out through the nose and deep down into the belly not shallow chest breathing. When you breathe this way as opposed to through the mouth and in the chest you shut off the bodies fight or flight response mechanism and can quickly calm the body, mind and reduce stress, fear and anxiety. Of course there are many simple techniques you can do, but this is the gold standard user friendly one to pick no matter where you are or what situation you find yourself in."www.gwenlawrence.comMeadow DeVor... author, yoga teacher, master life coach and founder of Yoga Church "My best tip is to remember to breathe. Our breath is always available as an anchor to ground us and to help us feel connected to the present moment. Take 3 deep breaths on purpose. It's the quickest way to change your state."www.meadowdevor.comKatarina Rayburn... London-based Dynamic Vinyasayoga teacher and practicesDharma yoga herself "My top tip for bringing mindfulness into everyday life would 100% be to practice yoga regularly but I appreciate that isn't realistic for everyone. So if that's the case then I'd say give yourself at least 10 minutes in the day where you are completely removed from any distractions, any technology and allow yourself to switch off, cultivating a more internal focus. Starting to notice your breath, linking the body and the mind, which is what we aim to achieve from a yoga practice. If you can get outside in the fresh air, even better! Removing all the clutter and just getting back to basics, it helps me to appreciate the simple things. Every single day, take a moment first thing in the morning to write down at least 10 things that you are grateful for and why. The more we can reflect on the every day things we are grateful for, the more positive and happy we feel and the more wonderful things we welcome in. You can also start to add in things that you would like to manifest, and write them down as if they have already happened, say thank you and then watch the magic happen!"www.calliyoga.co.ukSoul Analyse... online communitybuilt to remind you of who you are and help you gain clarity in an overloaded world "Present Moment Awareness The mind can be one of the biggest distractions when it comes to studying; you might sit down to work on an important project and suddenly your mind is wandering elsewhere, which leaves little room for productivity and concentration. Dwelling on the past and worrying about the future tend to be the biggest culprits of mind-wandering, so the best way to prevent your mind from straying is to bring your attention to the here and now. Breathing exercises are a great way to stay present, and you can try this method anytime you notice your mind wandering: Sitting in a comfortable position, focus your awareness on your breath don't try to change your breathing in any way, just simply observe. Feel the air as it flows into your body as you inhale, and listen to it as it leaves your body as you exhale. This helps to shift your attention from the mind and onto whatever is happening right now. Living in the present moment has many incredible benefits; when we are in a heightened state of awareness, our concentration increases and we are less likely to be distracted by intrusive thoughts. As a result, we experience increased peace, calm and happiness in our lives." www.soulanalyse.comKelly Brooks... trying to change the perspective of yoga, making it fun and accessible to everyone "Move your body, feel alive, breathe. The breath is so important for mindfulness. When you start to feel stressed out and like you have too much to do and you don't know where to start focus back on your breathing, "sit upright" I know our mothers told us that all the time as children but when we are slouching it's stopping us from breathing effectively. Long deep breath in and a long deep breath out, drop your tongue to the lower palate and relax the face and jaw. Just 5 deep breathes can make a difference when you are feeling overwhelmed. Another tip is to try and find something positive in every situation, life is out of our control and sometimes things don't go to plan. Staying present in each moment, allowing the emotions to come and go will help." www.kellybrooksyoga.comNatasha Sherikhora... finding inner peace to cultivate mindfulness, strength and flexibility in your body and mind "Yoga and mindfulness provides opportunity to de-stress, relax and to better cope with the stresses that are involved with being a student. During the busy periods of exams it feels impossible to squeeze anything else in your schedule, that's why it's so important to find some time for yourself in order to allow your mind to clear and to help your body to release the tension that you are constantly accumulating due to the stress. Start your morning with 10-15 minutes of easy meditation and your favourite physical exercises. You can even start in a bed, laying down with your spine straight, knees bent, right palm on the heart centre, left palm is on your belly. Alternatively sit tall on the chair or on the floor with you legs crossed, crown of the head reaches up, chin is parallel to the floor. Close your eyes and try to focus on the breath, observe all the sensations associated with the breath - your belly rises, chest expands, air goes in and out through your nostrils. Try to deepen your breath and pay special attention to lengthening your exhalation. These long soothing exhales are your best friend in every stressful situation, use it any time you need to focus and calm down. Don't underestimate the power of the breath, really soon you will notice the benefits even at the beginning it may feel like waist of time :) A few rounds of San Salutations, gentle stretching, a short run or dancing to your favourite song helps to improve blood flow, releasesendorphins and improves your mood for the day ahead! With all the classes, homework, exams, parents' expectations and jobs outside of school you are constantly under pressure. It's easy to lose your focus, to forget the purpose and to loose motivation. Stay present, don't compare yourself with anyone else, focus on the positive sides of the process and most be patient with yourself"www.soluckysogreen.comRachel Scott... artistic educator, romantic adventurer and yoga nerd "Being a student can be stressful! Juggling deadlines, workloads, and extracurricular activities can lead to anxiety and burn out. Mindfulness is a wonderful tool for reducing stress while increasing focus. One of my favourite mindfulness techniques is also the simplest: counting the breath. Best of all, you can do it wherever you are: in the library, seated before a test, or even during a lecture. - Sit comfortably with a tall spine. - Begin to count your breath: inhale for a count of four, and exhale for a count of four. - Continue to inhale and exhale slowly and evenly. - Repeat 5-10 times. Even just 5-10 repetitions will help to calm the body and still the busy-ness of the mind. If you have the time, extend the length of this practice to five minutes for a soothing and effective meditation. This simple exercise is a gem: slowing the breath pacifies the nervous system, while counting the breath helps to focus and clear the mind."www.rachelyoga.comKate Watson... Co-founder of NEUlotus, a multi-use yoga prop to help with alignment and support "Alignment in mindfulness and breath. When we talk about mindfulness and presence, the first thing we discuss is breath. How should you breathe to create a sense of relaxation in the body and mind? Diaphragmatic breathing drops our body out of the fight or flight' body response and into the parasympathetic nervous system, and this is where we need to be to relax! Our fight or flight' response is where we are mostly living these days and it is nearly impossible to relax in this state. Excess weight, stress, insomnia, addiction and a lack of concentration are all side effects of being in this fight or flight' state. This is where the breath can help change the bodies health, Pranayama. To begin a good Pranayama practice, find a comfortable position where your body can be in neutral, this will allow your diaphragm the proper space to expand and drop with the opening of your ribcage. Breathe deep and wide into your ribcage and exhale completely until the last stale air of your lungs exits the body. Repeat this breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth until you soften. Really take the time to concentrate on visualizing the breathe moving in and out of the body. Do you feel the softness and the ease? This is presence. This is alignment and mindfulness. Enjoy."
